The abacus was invented in Egypt; however, there are arguments that it was invented in China. Instead of using fingers, a rock was used covered with sand or dirt in which numbers were written in. Eventually it became a wooden frame connecting thin sticks or hair with beads or dried clay hanging on it for counting.
