Subject: AZ info

hi
I wasn't that sure where to e-mail the information about Arizona.

1. Arizona was admitted to the Union in 1912. Originally the area was settled
by the Spanish. Tucson was founded by an O'Connor (not that sure of the name),
an Irish member of the Spanish Army. Missionaries like Father Kino were
important in the early settlements.

2. Politically, AZ is right of center. Tucson did sent Mo Udall to Congress for
30 years. The current secretary of the interior, Bruce Babbitt was a former
governor. Two members of the Supreme Court are also from AZ - the chief justice
and the first woman, Sandra Day O'Connor. We also sent Republicans to DC like
Barry Goldwater, the former senator and John Rhodes, the house leader.
Currently, both Senators are Republicans (McCain and Kyle or something like
that, he is a fairly recent senator, won in 1994). There is a possibility that
our governor, Fife Symington will soon be under indictment.

3. We are booming, population growth is second in the nation. We have many
government bases, best flying weather in the country. AZ was once know as
Cattle, Cotton and Cooper. We are now in high-tech industry. We are a non-
union state with a low salary base.

We have national and natural wonders like the Grand Canyon (it is amazing).

Hello to all:

My name is Richard Hancock, and I am an English Language Arts teacher
for 100 12-13 year old students in Idaho Falls, Idaho, U.S.A. My kids are
currently writing to 5 different countries, but they are eager to reach out to
ANYONE ELSE, ANYWHERE ELSE on planet Earth. We would love to share our unique
culture with you as well as learn about yours. I, too, would enjoy
corresponding with any educators in schools around the globe. I learn so much
from the personal contacts I have had over the Internet. Like my students here
at Clair E. Gale Junior High School, I love to write. Hopefully we will be able
to exchange more than electronic mail between our classes. Perhaps friendship
boxes through the post would be possible.
Below, please find a list of my students. I have placed a ** by those
who are especially prolific, motivated, talented young writers. I hope this
might help you match some of your kids to mine.
Looking forward to hearing from you (oops! Perhaps "seeing" from you
is more accurate) on the net. :-) (an e-mail sideways happy face symbol)

Dear Mr Cassutto and classes,

I am the media specialist at Chopticon High School in Morganza, Maryland in
St. Mary's County. I read your posting and think this is a wonderful project.

As you probably know, St. Mary's County is the Mother County of Maryland.
Historic St. Mary's City is the site of the first permanent settlement in
Maryland and would make a great day-trip for anyone interested in a real
glimpse of early life in the colony.

St. Mary's County is not officially considered in the Washington
metropolitan area but is rapidly becoming a "bedroom community" for DC. The
United States Naval Air Station at Patuxent River is the major employer in
the county, providing both military and civilian employment.

I would be happy to correspond via E-mail with students who have questions
about the area.

As an interesting sidelight, the former minister at my parish, St. Paul's
United Methodist Church, moved to Hagerstown about 2 1/2 years ago and
serves as the pastor for Grace United Methodist Church. Perhaps some of
your students know Dr. George Ennis.

I hope to hear from you
