Overview:     The war of 1812 was fought between the US and Great Britain from June 1812 to the spring of 1815.  An event that pushed the US toward the war with Great Britain was in 1810 when Napoleon declared that France would end its attacks on American ships.  Then president Madison cut off trade with Britain, but the British continued to take over American ships.  Then Madison was thinking that war was the only way to make the British stop and respect the American rights.  In June 1812 the War Hawks convinced Congress to declare war on the British, the same month Britain agreed to stop attacking American ships.  On October 5, 1813 the US met a combined British and Indian force at Thames, a river north of Lake Erie.  The battle of Thames was a victory for the U.S. Tecumseh was killed at this battle. In August 1814 the British went marching to Washington D.C. and set it on fire. Washington burned while the president and the US government were at Virginia.  The British burned the president's house as well.  The last battle was the battle of New Orleans in which 2,000 British were killed or wounded  and only about 8 Americans were killed or wounded.  The treaty that ended the war was The Treaty of Ghent in 1814.
